A therapeutic option supporting educational success
Lakeside’s In-School Counselors are crucial to providing essential support to students with behavioral health or special education needs. The services they provide have proven to be an invaluable resource as both a prevention strategy for students at risk of being out-placed, intervention, or as a component of transition for students returning to public school from an alternative, mental health or juvenile justice placement.
Students
In-School Counselors are equipped to work with all school-age children attending public school. Student eligibility criteria are established by the school districts in which In-School Counselors work. Students typically served include those with behavioral health and/or special education related needs such as, but not limited to
- Anxiety and depression
- Crisis intervention
- Transition support
- Hospitalization and placement aftercare
- Emotional or behavioral support
- Substance abuse
- Social skill development
- Conflict and anger management
- Decision making
- Problem solving and self-advocacy
- Attendance and academic accountability
Services and Features
- Professional staff with Master’s degrees in Counseling or Social Work
- Individual and/or group counseling with a focus on success in school
- Licensed mental health care professionals qualified to provide Medical Asssistance eligible therapeutic services
- Counseling provided as a related service as per students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s)
- Coordination of mental health services and care
- Specific role variable based on school districts’ needs
- Parent consultation as needed
- Staff dedicated to a comprehensive team approach to help facilitate positive changes in students
- Counseling support provided with a primary focus on being trauma informed and brain based
