Two areas of Lakeside School that many students enjoy are our Industrial Arts Program and our Horticulture Program. For years, our students have been making incredible displays in our greenhouse that we have been able to display to the public. But the topper was what happened this past week.
Lakeside Students were asked to build a display at one of the largest flower shows in the world
The Philadelphia Flower Show is widely renoun and respected. This year the show featured the theme Holland: Flowering the World.
Our Lakeside students with our staff leadership, Jon Klinger and Lee Walters, designed a display and presented it to the Flower Show Officials which led to them being invited to display at this amazing show. Then about 40 of our students diligently worked to build the display, which took most of the school year. The display was featured in our local press just as the students finished its construction.
Then came the major work of tearing it all down, loading it into vehicles, traveling to the Philadelphia Convention Center and rebuilding the display. It was a huge commitment of time, resources and effort to be able to present the work entitled, A Country Tuin.
There were impressive displays from all over the world at the Philadelphia Flower.
Lakeside School was featured with its own display which received two second-place awards, and Best in Show honors for the use of herbs in a garden. For it to be the first year of being invited to display, we are extremely proud of our students for such an amazing accomplishment.
Of course, the work is not over until everything is torn down and brought back to the school.
It has been a tremendous learning experience for our students. We are extremely proud of them and celebrate this amazing accomplishment.
It is evidence of what can be accomplished when students and staff have a vision for design and capability to build something beautiful and unique.
It is such a picture of the work that we do everyday at Lakeside. We envision for our students, create new opportunities for their growth and development, and help them discover the skills to build not only a display, but a new life. Congratulations to Lakeside School staff and students!
