Over 2.7 million children have a parent who is incarcerated over the holiday season.
For these children there is an empty hole in their lives. Often our systems do not realize that these children are impacted so severely. Imagine their holiday memories during these times. I believe that if we are to provide care and support to them, it may be possible to provide some new options for seeing their parents particularly during the holidays.
Renee Menart has recently published an article on this topic that I think is relevant and compassionate toward children who have incarcerated parents. I think her points are excellent and should be heard by those in charge of our legal systems.

We certainly can make some changes in our systems that I believe would help our children through the trauma being separated from their parent. It is a humane and caring thing to do.
